Enfermera y ejecutiva estadounidense nacida en el Caribe. Se asoció con dos médicos para establecer el primer hospital destinado al tratamiento de afroamericanos tuberculosos en Harlem (1920). Siendo secretaria ejecutiva de la Asociación nacional de enfermeras graduadas de color de EE.UU. (NACGN, sigla en inglés), hizo campaña en favor de la integración (racial) en el Cuerpo de enfermeras de las fuerzas armadas de EE.UU.; la integración se logró plenamente en 1945, gracias a un apoyo público masivo, y en 1948 la NACGN obtuvo la membresía en la American Nurses Association (Asociación Americana de Enfermeras).
